What makes a nursing shoes better than any other nursing shoe? The answer is simple, does the nursing shoe get you through the days without any aches and pains and is it comfortable. A Good nursing shoes should be one that will not bother you or give you any feet or knee issue, through the workday you should not even think about the nursing shoe at all- that makes a good nursing shoe. As soon as you start adjusting your shoe or get pain or discomfort, this is the first sign that the nursing shoes worn is not ideal.
Nurses are on their feet all day and some almost pull 12 hours or more during a shift and hence a good fitting nursing shoe is a must. Did you know in general a study conducted by NCBI amongst 117 nurses in four different shifts, it estimates that an average nurse walks roughly 6km at about 9000 steps per shift. With such activity levels nursing shoes become your ultimate weapon against feet problems and reduces trips to the podiatrist. Another study by Elsevier concluded that a good pair of nursing shoes helps reduce musculoskeletal disorders in nursing and an ideal nurse shoe should have a good arch support with a 1.5cm outer EVA metatarsal zone with a heel height about 2cm.
So, what makes a nursing shoe good?
Some of the factors to consider while selecting a nursing shoe are:

- Good footbed with arch support – supports feet and enables all day comfort and wear
- Slip-resistant sole – very important on wet floors in the patient’s shoer or OR
- Lightweight and not too chunky – reduces effort while walking
- Breathable upper – keep your feet dry and prevents sweat buildup which in turn attracts fungal feet issues and blisters
- Shock absorption – reduces impact on the feet while walking all day
- Secure fit – prevents slipping of the heel and sliding
- Durable – lets face it, no one wants a shoe that will only last a few weeks
- Waterproof capabilities – this is ideal for nurses who shower patients and don’t want to get their feet and socks wet.
So, what should you avoid when selecting an ideal nursing shoe?
- Flat shoes with very little cushioning
- Heavy shoes
- Narrow near the toes area
- Loose fit shoes or tight feet shoes
- Smooth soled shoes which don’t provide much drip in wet conditions
- Nursing shoes that are lose around the heels
What is the twist test when it comes to nursing shoes?
This test involves bending and twisting the sole of the shoes. Hold the shoe at both ends and bend it or twist it. A good nursing shoes should be flexible in both the bend and twist motion as it should be flexible around the ball of the foot whilst walking. With regards to the twist the nursing shoe should twist but there also needs to be a degree of rigidity and should not be floppy. A good nursing shoes is designed to move in synergy while you move and should feel like a sock when worn yet feel comfortable and supportive.
